Island History

Having a long settling history that dates back to ancient times, Sovalye Island bears the mark of many distinct cultures, and is the product of the fusion of western and eastern Mediterranean civilizations.

Used as a minor settlement, the island was initially inhabited by the ancient Greek colonizers whom called the region as Makri.

Later on, it was home to Lycians, Seleucids, Romans, Byzantines, Crusaders Knights, and Ottomans who used the isle to protect the entrance of the Fethiye harbor.
